Grandfather Memories!

The Lord's Prayer
Today I was looking through some photos and found this one.  This is the Lord's Prayer (photo taken by my cousin's wife) which my grandfather actually handcarved himself.  It used to hang over the fireplace in my grandparent's house when they were still alive.  I think it is absolutely stunning.  He was such a talented man and do you know he even used to knit beautiful lace shawls too for his children and some of his grandchildren.
He was always out in his vegie garden or pottering around in his little sunroom which was his workshop.  The only thing I never got over was how he used to wear a cardigan nearly every day and living in Mildura was hot during the summer but he still wore it!  I do miss him quite a bit and think about him when I go and see my dad as he looks so much like him the older he gets!
Do you have fond memories of your grandparents when you were growing up?

What a beautiful wood carving! I had an awesome grandfather too -- I sure wish he were still here!

That carving really is amazing. Grandparents can be great, and it's so nice that you have very fond memories of him to enjoy. Don't get the cardigan in Mildura thing either!

Sadly I didn't know either of my grandfathers and one of my grandmothers. And the surviving grandmother died when I was 12, so I don't have a lot of memories of her either. Mostly I remember her crocheting (in thread) tablecloth after tablecloth. All the same, and never referring to a pattern. I'm often envious of people who have close relationships with their grandparents.

The wood carving is amazing and beautiful. I hope someone in your family still has it and treasures it.

Loving the new look blog Sue!
The carving is wonderful and he does sound like an amazing man indeed. We had a scare with my grandad recently and it totally freaked me out. He is so old but so, so precious.
Have a wonderful weekend Sue and I'd love to find out the no nit spray recipe.

A beautiful carving, what a talented man.
I lost my maternal grandparents before I turned seven years old but my paternal grandparents, well I adored them. I had a very difficult childhood with an alcoholic violent father and emotionally and mostly physically absent mother and I chose to live with my grandparents during some of my teens. My grandfather died when I was 14 and I spent even more time with my grandma. She was my safe haven and I loved her so much. She passed away about ten years ago and I still dream of her and her safe, cosy and loving home at least weekly. And she was a talented lady too, she gave me the love of knitting and patiently helped and watched as my skills developed.
Thanks for a lovely post which has made my day begin with happy thoughts.

I remember my great gran. In my grans house there are some beautiful pieces of crochet and lace work on the edges of large white table cloths which my great gran made. Alas I can't crochet but have the crochet hooks and yarn waiting for me to learn. My lovely gran taught me to knit and after almost 20 years I have decided to pick up up a pair of needles and start again... I also remember my gran teaching me to french knit? or french crochet? I will learn that again too.

My Gran is nearly ninty years old now and fell over the other day over a piece of carpet and broke her thima bone (sorry about spelling mistakes) so she is very much on my mind at the moment.

Wow, he really was talented!
Unfortunately, I do not have some specific memories of my grandparents since I've never met those from my mother's side.Father's side ... well grandma is still alive and kicking!

It must have been great to know such a great man.
Sadly my grand fathers both died before I was around.
I hope my daughters make the most of their time with the grand parents.

That is so beautiful! I am amazed at the skill and patience that must have taken. It touches a chord with me since I just lost the last of my grandparents. I have a lot of wonderful memories though!

I was lucky enough to know all my grandparents. When I came back to England from Oz, I returned to the area I had known as a happy child when I stayed with my granny.
I'm glad you have such treasures.
Cheers Gillian

gorgeous - and I love that he knit. I was lucky to have my 3 of my grandparent's in my life until my 30's and have so many fond memories of them!

That is a beautiful wood carving! Your grandfather was very talented. My grandfather (on my dad's side) worked with wood also. He made two beautiful cedar wood hope chests for me and my sister and he also made desks for us when we were in school. My grandmother (on my mom's side) was an avid knitter. I still have a fisherman knit sweater she knit for me when I was in college.
